Andrea Meloni was born in Rome on February 14, 1952.
He was awarded a degree in Political Science at the University
of Pavia in 1974, and entered the diplomatic career in 1975.
His first assignments were at the Directorate General for Economic
Affairs; he was then First Commercial Secretary in Maputo (1978),
and in Buenos Aires (1982).
In 1985 he became Counselor at the Italian Embassy in Islamabad.
Having returned to the Foreign Ministry in Rome in 1987, he worked
at the Directorate General for Development Cooperation, first
as acting head of the Latin America Office and then as Head of
the Budget and Programming Office.
Starting in 1991 he was First Counselor at the Permanent Representation
of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva; he was Deputy Permanent
Representative to GATT, and later to the WTO. From 1995 to 2003
he was President of the Work Group for the accession of Cambodia
to the WTO.
He was Consul General in Buenos Aires from 1996 al 1999. Once
back in Rome, he was assigned to the General Secretariat where,
having been promoted to the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary in
June 2000, he was Deputy Head of the Secretariat, and then Head
of the Analysis and Programming Sector.
Since January 2006 he is the Italian Representative to the Political
and Security Commission of the European Union.
He speaks English, French and Spanish.
